491, 190 Visa South Australia Nomination Requirements

Specific requirements can vary depending on the migration stream you take.

Stream 1: Offshore Skilled Migration

To be eligible for nomination, you must:

  • Be under 45 years old
  • Nominate an occupation that’s eligible under the ‘Offshore’ stream (see SA Occupation List)
  • Show you have the necessary skills and work experience for your nominated occupation
  • Have a valid and positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Achieve at least Competent English skills or higher if required by your occupation’s licensing authority
  • Achieve at least 65 points in the Department of Home Affairs points test (inclusive of state nomination points)

Stream 2: SA Residents and Workers

To be eligible for nomination, you must:

  • Have lived in South Australia for at least the last 12 months
  • Be currently employed, and have been employed full-time (at least 30 hours a week) in your nominated occupation or a closely related role for the last 6 months
  • Be under 45 years old
  • Nominate an occupation that’s eligible under the ‘Working in South Australia’ stream (see SA Occupation List)
  • Have a valid and positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Achieve at least Competent English skills or higher if required by your occupation’s licensing authority
  • Achieve at least 65 points in the Department of Home Affairs points test (inclusive of state nomination points)

Stream 3: International SA Graduates

To be eligible for nomination, you must:

  • Have lived in SA for at least the last 12 months
  • Have lived in SA for at least 1 year during your studies
  • Have finished a CRICOS-registered course at an education provider in South Australia:
    • It must span at least 46 CRICOS weeks.
    • It must meet the minimum skill level for your nominated occupation, as specified in the Skilled Occupation List.
    • At least 50% of your qualifications must have been completed in SA.
  • Be currently employed, and have been employed full-time (at least 30 hours a week) in your nominated occupation or a closely related role for the last 6 months
  • Be under 45 years old
  • Nominate an occupation that’s eligible under the ‘South Australian Graduates’ stream (see SA Occupation List)
  • Have a valid and positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Have Competent English skills or higher if required by your occupation’s licencing authority
  • Score 65 points or more in the Department of Home Affairs points test (inclusive of state nomination points)

Stream 4: Highly Skilled and Talented

This skilled migration program stream is open for all migrants in Australia, as well as offshore skilled workers. 

To be eligible for this stream, you must primarily have work experience in the following industries:

  • Hi-Tech or Digital Industry

You must have at least 2 years of experience in one of the critical technology professions below:

  • Artificial Intelligence (AI) Specialist
  • Cybersecurity Analyst
  • Data Scientist
  • Robotics Engineer
  • Cloud Architect
  • Internet of Things (IoT) Specialist
  • Blockchain Developer
  • Renewable Energy Engineer
  • Augmented Reality (AR) / Virtual Reality (VR) Developer
  • Biotechnology Researcher
  • Quantum Computing Scientist
  • 5G Network Engineer
  • Advanced Manufacturer
  • Defence or Space Industry

If you’re in South Australia, you must already be working full-time (30 hours a week)

If overseas, you must show proof that you possess specialized skills in the Defence or Space Industry. You must also be willing to relocate to South Australia.

You must also meet the general eligibility criteria, which are as follows: 

  • Be under 45 years old
  • Have a positive skills assessment for your nominated occupation
  • Have Competent English skills
  • Score 65 points or more in the Department of Home Affairs points test (inclusive of state nomination points)
  • If working or offered a position in South Australia, work under an employer that:
    • Is located in South Australia and has operated for the past 12 months
    • Has annual turnover of at least AUD 4 million (startup companies, or businesses operating in regional South Australia or supporting the Defence Sector may be exempt)
    • Has good reputation in Australia, without any adverse information about it
