About the 601 visa

Electronic Travel Authority (ETA) lets you travel to Australia temporarily if you have an eligible passport from one of the listed countries. You can’t apply with a non-citizen passport, a certificate of identity, or other travel documents. With this visa, you can travel to Australia as a tourist for a cruise or a holiday, visit family or friends, and even carry out some business activities.

Stay Duration: Up to 3 months at a time

Visa cost: ETA is free. There is an online application charge of AU$20.

601 Visa Conditions

As the visa applicant, you must,

  • apply from outside Australia
  • have an eligible passport

601 Visa Eligibility

  • You must be a genuine visitor and only intend to stay temporarily in Australia as well as obey any condition and stay period attached to your visa.
  • You must have an eligible passport from one of the eligible countries.
  • Meet all the health and character requirements
  • Must not have any debt to pay to the Australian government.
  • With under 18 applicants, it must be in the best interest of them.

Note: If you have had a visa cancelled or previous application refused, you may not be granted a visa.

601 Visa benefits

General notes

  • You can study or train for up to 3 months in total on this visa. But if your main reason for travelling to Australia is studying, a student visa might be more appropriate.
  • As a business visitor, you can:
      • make general business or employment enquiries
      • investigate, negotiate, enter into or review a business contract
      • conduct activities as part of an official government visit
      • take part in a conference, trade fair or seminar. The organisers can’t pay you to take part
    • You can’t:
      • work for or provide services to a business or organisation based in Australia
      • sell goods or services directly to the public
  • If you want to do short-term work in Australia that isn’t a business visitor activity, consider applying for a temporary work visa.
  • This is a temporary visa. This is valid for 12 months from the date it is granted, or how long your passport is valid for, whichever is shorter.
  • You can’t stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. You must apply for 600 visa.
  • You can’t include family members in your application. A separate application must be made for each member of your family, including those listed on your passport.
