Contributory Parent Visa (subclass 143)

Visa Eligibility

To qualify for this visa, you must:

• Be sponsored by an eligible sponsor, ideally by an eligible child who is a settled Australian citizen, Permanent resident or Eligible New Zealand citizen, unless you are applying for the Retirement Pathway
• meet the balance-of-family test, unless you are applying for the Retirement Pathway or have the Subclass 173 visa
• Obtain an Assurance of Support, unless you are applying for the Retirement Pathway
• Meet the health and character requirements
• Must not have any debt to pay to the Australian government.
• not have already applied for or hold a Sponsored Parent (Temporary) (Subclass 870) visa when applying for this visa
• If you are 18 years of age or older, you must: have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia book AND sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.

Note: If you have had a visa cancelled or previous application refused, you may not be granted a visa.

Visa Health and Character Requirements

Health Requirement

You, including other family members applying for the visa with you (and in some instances, non-migrating family members), must meet the health requirement. You need to be in good health, free from any medical condition that could:

• pose a risk to public health
• cause significant expenses for healthcare and community services
• place a demand on limited healthcare or community services

Character Requirement

Both you and your family members who are applying for the visa with you (and in some instances, non-migrating family members) must meet the character requirement. This includes having no substantial criminal record or no record of involvement in any criminal conduct.

Visa Processing Time

The processing time for the 143 contributory parent visa can be quite long, taking at least 12 years.
