Training visa (subclass 407)

As the visa applicant, you must,

• be sponsored
• be nominated (unless your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency)
• be invited (if your sponsor is a Commonwealth Government agency)

• You can be in or outside Australia when you apply for the visa and when DOHA decides on your application.
• You must have a sponsor that is approved as a temporary activities sponsor.
• Your sponsor must have nominated you to participate in a program of occupational training unless your sponsor is an Australian Commonwealth Government agency. Meet all the health and character requirements
• You must be 18 years old or older at the time we decide your visa application.
• If you are applying in Australia, you must currently hold a valid temporary substantive visa that is not a: a Subclass 403 (Temporary Work (International Relations) visa in the Domestic Worker (Diplomatic or Consular stream) OR a Subclass 771 (Transit) visa OR a Special Purpose visa. If you are in Australia and do not hold a substantive visa, your last substantive visa must not have been one of the above visas, and your application must be made within 28 days:
  • after the last substantive visa, you held ceased to be in effect or
  • after the day you were notified of the Administrative Appeal Tribunal’s decision to set aside and substitute the decision to cancel your substantive visa, or the Minister's decision not to revoke the cancellation of your substantive visa.
• You must be a genuine temporary entrant and only intend to: stay temporarily in Australia AND do the things you are allowed to do on this visa. Also, you must have substantially complied with the conditions of the last substantive or subsequent bridging visa that you held.
• You must have functional English.

  IELTS - An average band score of at least 4.5 based on the 4 test components

• You must meet the Australian government’s health and character requirements.
• You must have adequate health insurance to cover your stay in Australia.
• You must not have any debt to pay to the Australian government.
• If you are 18 years of age or older, you must: have read, or had explained to you, the Life in Australia booklet AND sign an Australian Values Statement that confirms you will respect the Australian way of life and obey Australian laws.
• With under 18 applicants, it must be in the best interest of them.

Note: If you have had a visa cancelled or previous application refused, you may not be granted a visa.

Opportunity to visit Australia to complete a workplace-based training (to improve your skills for your current occupation, area of tertiary study or field of expertise), or a professional development training program.

There are three types of occupational training covered by this visa:

Occupational training required for registration

Workplace-based training is required to get occupational registration, membership or licensing. The registration, membership or licensing is mandatory to work in that occupation in Australia or your home country.

Occupational training to improve skills in an eligible occupation

Workplace-based structured training programs that:

• is specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person
• is in relation to an occupation specified on the list of eligible skilled occupations
• involves a nominee who has recent and suitable prior experience. This can include employment experience or study experience that is the equivalent of at least 12 months of full-time experience in the occupation AND has occurred in the 24 months immediately before the nomination is lodged.

Occupational training for capacity building overseas.

This includes overseas qualification, government support or professional.

Overseas qualification

Structured workplace-based training in Australia for up to 6 months for students who:

• are currently enrolled in a foreign educational institution and
• must complete a period of practical training, research or observation to get their qualification
• The training must be specifically tailored to the training needs of the nominated person.

Government support

Structured workplace-based occupational training which has:

• the support of a government agency in Australia or
• the government in the home country of the nominated trainee
• Government agency support in Australia must be at the national or state/territory level.
• The government in the nominated person’s home country must be at the national, state/territory or provincial level.
• The training must be specifically tailored and timed to the training needs of the nominated person.

Professional development

Professional development programs of face-to-face teaching in a classroom or similar environment in Australia. It is for overseas employers to send their managerial or professional employees.

Depending on the purpose or type of training, nomination requirements are different and need to be met accordingly. A nomination is a stage where the sponsor provides details about the nominee (intended trainee), the purpose or type of training and how and where the training will be provided.

• You must be one of the following types of organisations:
  • an organisation lawfully operating in Australia
  • Government agency
  • Foreign government agency
  • Religious Institution
• You must be an approved temporary activities sponsor to sponsor an applicant for this visa. To be approved, you must directly provide the occupational training, unless you are an Australian Commonwealth Government agency or have an exemption.
• It costs AUD420 to sponsor and AUD170 to nominate an applicant for this visa.
• DOHA informs you how long your sponsorship will last when they approve it. Usually, sponsorship lasts for five years, starting from the date of approval.
• You must meet your obligations as a Temporary Activities sponsor. You are responsible for meeting these obligations even if you appoint someone to act for you.
• You can withdraw your sponsorship at any time before DOHA decides on the visa application. You must make your request in writing and include: your full name; your date of birth; the file reference number or Client ID.
• You cannot withdraw sponsorship after DOHA has made their decision. If you withdraw your sponsorship before a visa is granted the visa is usually refused. We may invite the applicant to provide another sponsor.

• You can leave and re-enter Australia on the visa while it is valid.
• You can't stay in Australia longer by extending this visa. Consult our expert registered migration agents to explore your visa options.
• You can include members of the family unit in your application when you apply. If we grant you the visa, your family members might be able to apply to join you in Australia later as a subsequent entrant.
• Changing Sponsors:
  • If you decide to train with another organisation while you are in Australia, you will need to be sponsored by that organisation. They must submit a new nomination for you. When the new nomination is approved, you can do your occupational training with that organisation for the time remaining on your visa. You do not have to apply for a new visa, as long as you continue to do the training program your visa was approved for.
  • If your occupational training program changes, you need to submit a new visa application.
  • If your sponsor ends your training, you must inform DOHA. You may try to find another organisation to sponsor you.
  • You may have to explain why you were unable to complete the training within the initial training period.
